About Us: Families For Safe Roads Inc. has a simple but very powerful mission. We want to educate, council, and coach families: just how dangerous our roads are; and second, how really simple it is to eliminate almost all traffic accidents. We start with families because roads represent our youth's #1 risk. Again, in America "the automobile is the number killer of every age group between the ages of 3 and 33." But incredibly, we parents still underestimate the problem--- and big time. In fact, we don't even consider the possibility of a tragic traffic accident envolving our kids, even though we probably saw an unsafe, aggressive or careless driving incident as recently as this morning on the way into work. To illustrate our national apathy I offer the following political exchange: My very liberal brother-in-law recently made the statement that Americans were barbarians because of their love affair with guns. So concerned, he actually argued that he would move out of the country if we don't outlaw guns -------- nevermind our Constitution. I thought my reponse was provocative: In 61 years of life I have never, not once, seen a gun being pointed at someone. Yet, every single day I do see some SOB aggressively threatening me or my family with their wild ass driving. Folks, nationally we spend thousands of times more of our resources trying to prevent crime of all types yet allow the other driver to threaten our loved ones with only our "road rage" as a response. Think about that. What's more threatening each and everyday; someone with a gun or an out of control car riding our bumper? If you said the gun toting criminal you need our coaching----- hopefully before one of your loved ones is mamed or killed by unsafe driving. 
Another sobering thought that illustrates our universal apathy toward highway safety: how much family protection do we really get from our auto insurance? Could a huge insurance payoff or court settlement ever replace your child's life or make up for a serious traffic accident injury? | The seed for Families For Safe Roads Inc. was actually planted over 35 years ago. The founder was a very young and misled traffic engineer just out of engineering school. He was a graduate engineer working in a young profession, highway safety. He was doing what all local traffic engineers were doing back then and even today; he was analyzing unsafe locations (i.e., intersections and street segments) on his city's street network in order to reduce traffic accidents. Wrong!! He ---- and the rest of the profession--- were simply studying the wrong variables. For instance, what if the driver, not unsafe intersection designs were the real cause of most traffic accidents? The first hint that something was wrong with this basic assumption in highway safety came at one of those early accident problem solving meetings some three and half decades ago. A coworker made one of the most profound and obvious statements in highway safety history. "It's the driver, stupid!" Not surprisingly, it was totally underestimated how profound this observation was at the time. Highway safety engineers are indeed a blind lot. In fact, the vast majority of today's traffic engineering and highway safety experts still don't understand the profundity. This simple admonishment ("it's the driver, stupid") meant that minimizing traffic accidents at an intersection or other spot roadway location, at best, would only move the real problem to another location. It meant that "location based" accident reduction may reduce accidents at a critical intersection but not for the entire city. This is profound so understand it and you'll catch the secret to eliminating most all traffic accidents. Aggressive or careless drivers will just find another location to threaten our families if our society does not change our society's unsafe driving habits. The accident statistics bear this out. Over a recent 10 year period the number of fatalities and injuries on our roads is remarkably consistent and tragic even with billions and billions being spent to make our roads safe. Obviously, we in highway safety are missing something. Yes, that something is, "it's the driver, stupid." Fast forward to today, some three and a half decades later. We haven't learned much, the vast majority of the highway safety resources are still being misallocated on "location based" accident analysis rather than identifying and removing poor driving habits from our roads. Our coach and founder will not be around another 36 years but he fears that the same "careless and reckless" driving that is so prevalent on today's roads will also characterize tomorrow's highway network. More to the point, he is afraid that unsafe driving will continue to kill in excess of 40,000 people and injure over 3,200,000 family members every year.
